Brake System Warning
Pull Over Now — Urgency 5/5Do not drive with this light on unless you have confirmed it was just the handbrake. If your brakes feel different in any way — softer, less responsive, or making unusual noises — stop immediately and call for help. This is general guidance — always consult a qualified mechanic.
This is general guidance. Your situation may differ — when in doubt, don’t drive.
What does this mean?
This light means there is a serious problem with your braking system. It could mean your brake fluid is dangerously low, there is a leak in the brake lines, or your brake pads are completely worn out. Your brakes are the most important safety feature in your car — this is not one to ignore.
What should I do right now?
First, check if your handbrake (parking brake) is still on — that is the most common innocent cause. If it is fully released and the light stays on, pull over as soon as it is safe. Test your brakes gently at low speed. If they feel spongy, go to the floor, or the car pulls to one side, do not drive any further. Call for a tow.
