Oil Pressure Warning

Pull Over Now — Urgency 5/5
Can I still drive? — We recommend you do not drive

Do not drive with this light on. Even a short drive could destroy your engine. Pull over right away, turn the engine off, and get help. An engine replacement costs thousands — a tow costs far less. This is general guidance and not a substitute for professional advice specific to your vehicle.

This is general guidance. Your situation may differ — when in doubt, don’t drive.

What does this mean?

This light usually looks like a little oil can or genie lamp. It means your engine oil pressure has dropped dangerously low. Oil is what keeps all the metal parts inside your engine from grinding against each other. Without proper oil pressure, your engine can seize up in minutes.

What should I do right now?

Pull over as soon as it is safe and turn off the engine immediately. Check your oil level using the dipstick — if it is very low, you may be able to top it up and see if the light goes off. If the oil level looks fine or the light stays on after topping up, do not restart the engine. Call for a tow.
