Clicking from the Dashboard

Info Only — Urgency 1/5
Can I still drive? — Yes, in most cases

Perfectly safe to drive. The clicking has no effect on the car's performance or safety. It is just an annoying noise from the climate control system. This is general information only.

This is general guidance. Your situation may differ — when in doubt, don’t drive.

What does it sound like?

A soft, repetitive clicking sound from behind the dashboard, often when you turn the heating or air conditioning on or off, or when the car is adjusting temperature. It might also happen when the car is first turned on.

What could be causing it?

This is almost always a blend door actuator — a small electric motor that moves flaps inside your heating and ventilation system to direct airflow and mix hot and cold air. When the motor or the plastic gears inside it wear out, it clicks as it tries to move the flap.

It can also be a relay clicking (an electrical switch making and breaking contact), which is normal in many cars and nothing to worry about.

What should I do right now?

This is a comfort issue, not a safety one. If it bothers you, a mechanic can replace the actuator, but it can sometimes be an awkward job depending on the car as it is buried behind the dashboard. Mention it at your next service and they can advise on cost.

This information is for general guidance only. Car noises can have multiple causes, and a proper diagnosis requires a professional inspection. Always consult a qualified mechanic for advice specific to your vehicle.
