Rough Idle Vibration

No Rush — Urgency 2/5
Can I still drive? — Yes, in most cases

Safe to drive. A rough idle is annoying but not dangerous in most cases. If the engine feels like it is about to stall or the check engine light comes on, get it looked at promptly. This is general guidance only.

This is general guidance. Your situation may differ — when in doubt, don’t drive.

What does it sound like?

The engine shakes or vibrates noticeably when the car is stopped at traffic lights or in a queue with the engine running. You might feel it through the steering wheel, the seat, or the whole car. The rev counter needle may bounce slightly instead of sitting steady.

What could be causing it?

Common causes include worn spark plugs, a dirty air filter, clogged fuel injectors, or a failing idle air control valve. Worn engine mounts can also make normal vibrations feel much worse because they are not dampening them properly.

In diesel cars, some vibration at idle is normal. If it has got noticeably worse recently, something has likely changed.

What should I do right now?

Mention it at your next service. If your car is due for a service soon, this may resolve itself with fresh spark plugs, a new air filter, and a fuel system clean. If the vibration is severe or the engine feels like it might stall, get it checked sooner.

This information is for general guidance only. Car noises can have multiple causes, and a proper diagnosis requires a professional inspection. Always consult a qualified mechanic for advice specific to your vehicle.
