Whining Power Steering

Can I still drive? — With caution

You can drive, but get it looked at soon. Driving without proper power steering fluid can burn out the pump, which is an expensive replacement. If the steering becomes very heavy or difficult, do not drive — get a tow. This is general information — consult a professional for your vehicle.

This is general guidance. Your situation may differ — when in doubt, don’t drive.

What does it sound like?

A whining or humming noise that gets louder when you turn the steering wheel. It is most noticeable at low speeds or when parking. The sound comes from the engine area and changes pitch as you turn.

What could be causing it?

If your car has hydraulic power steering, this is almost always low power steering fluid or a failing power steering pump. The pump works hardest when you turn the wheel, and when it is low on fluid or wearing out, it whines.

A leak in a power steering hose can cause fluid to drop over time. You might notice a puddle of red or brown fluid under the car near the front. Air bubbles in the system from a leak also cause whining.

Note: cars with electric power steering do not have fluid and will not make this noise — if yours is electric and you hear whining, it could be a motor issue.

What should I do right now?

Check the power steering fluid reservoir and top it up if low. If you need to keep topping it up, there is a leak that needs fixing. Book a mechanic visit within the next week. If the pump fails completely, your steering will still work but will be very heavy to turn.

This information is for general guidance only. Car noises can have multiple causes, and a proper diagnosis requires a professional inspection. Always consult a qualified mechanic for advice specific to your vehicle.
