Engine Coolant Temperature (High)
Pull Over Now — Urgency 5/5Do not drive with this light on. Pull over immediately and let the engine cool. Driving even a short distance with an overheating engine can cause catastrophic damage. Let it cool down and call for help. This is general guidance — always seek professional advice for your specific vehicle.
This is general guidance. Your situation may differ — when in doubt, don’t drive.
What does this mean?
This light means your engine is overheating. Coolant (also called antifreeze) flows around your engine to keep it at the right temperature. If it gets too hot, the engine can warp, crack, or seize — causing thousands in damage. You might also see steam coming from under the bonnet.
What should I do right now?
Pull over as soon as it is safe and turn off the engine. Do NOT open the bonnet straight away — everything under there will be extremely hot. Wait at least 15 to 20 minutes for things to cool down. Do NOT open the coolant cap while the engine is hot — it is under pressure and can spray boiling fluid. Call for a tow or roadside assistance.
