Low Oil Level
Schedule a Visit — Urgency 3/5You can drive short distances but top up the oil as soon as possible — ideally today. Driving with low oil increases engine wear. If the oil pressure light also comes on, pull over immediately. This is general guidance — your mechanic can advise on your specific car.
This is general guidance. Your situation may differ — when in doubt, don’t drive.
What does this mean?
This light means your engine oil level is getting low. This is different from the oil pressure warning — your oil pressure is still okay, but you are running low on oil. All engines use a bit of oil over time, so this can be normal. But if it happens often, there may be a leak or your engine is burning oil.
What should I do right now?
Check your oil level using the dipstick and top it up if needed. You can buy the right oil from a car parts shop — check your car's manual for the correct type. If you are topping up oil frequently (more than once between services), mention it to your mechanic.
